Retired US Army SFC Ulus Jackson Jones, Sr., 85, passed away on Wednesday, March 24, 2021, at Green Leaf Care Center in Lillington, NC.\n\nSFC Jones retired from the US Army after more than twenty years of service. He also served two years in the US Marine Corp. He served both in Korea and two tours in Vietnam. After military retirement, he worked with the water department for the Town of Spring Lake, where he was a licensed plumber and supervisor for the plumbing department. He later retired with over twenty years of service. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Spring Lake.\n\nUlus, affectionately called "Jonesy" and "Uncle Sambo" loved to talk and visit. There was not anyone in Spring Lake that he did not know. He enjoyed fishing and was a nature aficionado. He was passionate about taking care of his grapevines and pecan trees. He loved his family and stayed in contact with them, especially his grandchildren.\n\nHe is preceded in death by his wife, Annie Jane McLeod Jones. Ulus was the last survivor of seven siblings. Also preceding him in death are brothers and sisters: Clara May "Penny" Hollomon; Retha Champion; Evelyn Benson, Marvin Jones; David Jones and Marie Champion. \n\nHe is survived by sons, Ulus J. "Jack" Jones, Jr. of Cameron, NC; David B. Jones and wife, Lisa, of Fayetteville, NC; Sherman W. Jones and wife, Andrea, of Iowa; and Lisa J. McNeill and husband, Joseph, of Lillington, NC; five grandsons; five granddaughters; and nine great-grandchildren. \n\nThere will be a graveside service honoring Ulus on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at 3:00pm at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery, Fort Bragg with military honors.\n\nIn lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 201 South Main Street, Spring Lake, NC 28390.
