Bunnlevel, NC
SFC Mart Thomas Lewis, III, 72, of Bunnlevel peacefully went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, July 27, 2021 while surrounded by his family.
Mart was born on June 7, 1949 in Moorehead City, NC to the late Lattie Mae Smith and Mart T. Lewis, Jr. He was the youngest of four children and the only boy in their family.
Mart was a good, honest, hard-working man who loved his family and did everything he could to provide for them. He met, Donna Hambelton, his best friend and love of his life during Junior year at Pineforest High School and recently celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary. Together, they have two children, Michael Anthony Lewis and his wife Julie, and Matthew Thomas Lewis. He leaves behind many family members, friends, and coworkers who will miss him dearly, including his sisters, Ramona Powell (Jim), Cindy Rickard (Wally), and Marie Sardillo.
Mart joined the Army in 1968 and retired 22 years later as a Sergeant First Class, working as a drill sergeant. He spent the next 22 years working for the Town of Spring Lake as the streets department supervisor. After retirement from the town, Mart was bored, so he went to work at Lowes Home Improvement in Dunn in the plumbing and electrical department. He loved his job and those he met on a daily basis. He had nicknames for his coworkers and they often referred to him as "Grandpa or Pop". When he wasn't at his job, he was at home making memories with his sons working in the shop. Mart loved going to family reunions and playing checkers and catching up with his family. Mostly, Mart loved the Lord and was not shy about his faith. He took every opportunity he could to share his love of Jesus with others.
There will be a funeral service honoring Mart's life on Monday, August 2, 2021 at 11:00am at Dunn Advent Christian Church, 700 Pearsall Street, Dunn, NC 28334. There will be visitation prior to the service beginning at 10:00am. In honor of Mart's love for children, the family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to Camp Dixie.
