Rita Cox Johnson

Rita Elizabeth Cox Johnson, 71 of Spring Lake, North Carolina, passed away on October 2, 2019, with her family by her side.

Rita Elizabeth Johnson was born to the late Venton E. Cox and Evelyn A Gibbs on February 4, 1948 in North West Washington, D.C. She received her education through the Washington, DC public school system. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Washington, D.C.

She married Charles L. Johnson, Sr in April 1972. They lived together in Spring Lake, North Carolina for 31 years after relocating from Fort Bragg. Rita is survived by her husband, Charles L. Johnson, Sr; daughter Rochelle Corona and son in law, Francisco Corona; daughter Michelle Bush and son in law, Eric Bush; daughter in law Tamica Johnson; five grandchildren, JaJuan Bush, Leticia Corona, Merced Corona, Francisco Corona Jr, and Amaya Johnson.

She is also survived by her mother Evelyn A Cox; sister Nadine Newsome, sister Jean Saunders and brother in law Joseph Saunders; brother David Cox and sister in law Pamela Cox; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Rita was predeceased by her father, Venton E. Cox in 1969; grandmother, Elizabeth Gibbs in 1974; grandmother, Pansy Cox in 1979; and son, Charles L. Johnson Jr. 2017.

Rita was a crossing guard for the Fort Bragg school system for nearly 30 years before retiring in 2012. She enjoyed arts and crafts, collecting coloring books for adults, watching classic movies, shopping and most of all spending time with her grandchildren. She always had a smile on her face and a great sense of humor. Rita will be missed by all who knew her.

Funeral services will be held at Adcock Funeral home, 2226 Lillington Highway Spring Lake, NC 28390 on Friday, October 11, 2019 at 12:30pm . Interment will follow at 2:00 PM at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery, 8220 Bragg Blvd, Fort Bragg, NC 28310
