Retired Army Sergeant First Class Richard Ivan Garner, Sr, 75, of Spring Lake, passed away Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at Womack Army Hospital. In addition to being retired from the Army, Mr. Garner was also retired from civil service.\n\nMr. Garner was born in Martins Ferry, Ohio (6/26/1941) to the late Russell and Alberetta Specht Garner.\n\nMr. Garner's favorite colors were red, white and blue. He deeply loved his country and his family. Having twice retired, he enjoyed spending time with his family and the love of his life, his wife of 55 years, Doris Fallin Garner. He often appeared in full Santa attire around the holidays to the delight of young and old alike.\n\nIn addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters Irene, Ruth, Lois, Kathy and Annice; and brothers Ernie and Tom. He is survived by his wife Doris; three sons, Richard (Beth) Garner of Sanford, Ernest (Jeanette) Garner of Hope Mills, and Glenn \n\nGarner of Spring Lake; two daughters, Brenda Matteson of Cameron and Debra (Danny) Compton of Cameron; four brothers, Fred (Deborah) Garner of Rayland, OH, Russell (Rose) Garner of Florida, Charles (Diana) Garner of Steubenville, OH, and David (Maureen) Garner of Maine; four sisters, Barbara (Joe) Douglas of West Virginia, Carol Drummond of Bridgeport, OH, Linda (Jim) Zaremba of Michigan, and Margo Kavanas of Rayland, OH; eight grandchildren, Jeffrey, Danielle, Sara, Ashley, Jared, Zachary, Cheyenne and Logan; and many nieces and nephews.\n\nThe family will receive friends Sunday, October 9 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Adcock Funeral Home in Spring Lake. The funeral, with full military honors, will be Monday, October 10 at 2:00 pm in the chapel of Adcock Funeral Home with Pastor Dale Sauls officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Memorial Gardens, intersection of Bragg Boulevard and Vass Road, Spring Lake, NC.\n\nDue to the hurricane, the interment for Mr. Garner has been rescheduled for Saturday, October 15, 2016, at 11:00 AM in Riverview Memorial Gardens with full military rites.
