Mabel Lois Cannon Higgins

–

Spring Lake, NC

On 22 February 2021, surrounded by her loving family, Mabel Lois Cannon Higgins returned home to her heavenly father. Born 16 June 1936 in Johnston County NC, to Joseph Wade and Zada Cox Cannon (Pitt County NC), Mabel was a tremendously warm, sincerely caring, and unceasingly loving personality who selflessly dedicated the 84 fulfilling years of her life in service to God, country, community, family, and friends.

To those whose hearts she touched, Mabel was often referred to as "One-of-a-kind". She was a devoted wife of 52 years, loving mother to 4 children, youngest sister and friend to 9 Cannon siblings, and an open heart to any soul in need. Her warm smile, quick wit, engaging personality, and unwavering compassion for others remained with her through her final days with us. Mabel's favorite colors - purple and red, favorite place - in the sun at the beach or by the pool. She enjoyed a good book or game of bridge, liked her coffee hot and fresh, oysters small, and welcomed good company anytime it was available.

Mabel will be remembered for her volunteer work with the Cancer Center of Fayetteville, The Care Clinic of Fayetteville, Cape Fear Valley Blood Donor Program, Red Hat Society, Spring Lake Regional Library Book Club, and the Fayetteville Seniors Center Bridge Club. Mabel attended East Carolina University and spent over 30 years as a Medical Technologist at Womack Army, Cape Fear Valley, and Highsmith Rainey Hospitals in Fayetteville NC.

Mabel was preceded in death by a devoted husband of 52 years - Richard P. Higgins Sr.; parents Joseph and Zada; sisters Mary Francis Swaney, Margaret Daughtry, Mildred Midgett, Martha Butts, Myrtle Joyner, and Melba Parker; brothers Oris Cannon and Joseph "Mack" Cannon; and grand-daughter Sarah Jane Higgins Allred.
