George Dewey Harris Jr. passed away on May 31, 2017 at Cape Fear Hospital in Fayetteville, North Carolina at the age of 83. He was born in Staunton, Virginia to George and Elizabeth Harris. He was the second child of five children. During tour of duty in Germany during the occupation after World War II he met and married his wife of 63 years, Johanna Maria Reiff. They were married on June 14, 1953 in Mayen, Germany and are the parents of three children.\n\nGeorge entered the United States Air Force in 1951 and served for 23 years until his retirement in 1974 in Annapolis, Maryland. George served overseas tours of duty with the Air Force in Germany, Morocco, Turkey, and Thailand. George was an active member of the local VFW Post 304 in Annapolis. In 1994 George was awarded a Special Service Award from Post 304 for 20 years of outstanding performance and dedication to the post including 10 terms as Post Commander. In 1995 George and his wife moved to Spring Lake, North Carolina to be closer to family.\n\nGeorge was preceded in death by his wife Johanna and daughter Virginia Maria Mason. He is survived by his two sons Jimmy Franz Meurer and George Dewey Harris III. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.\n\nGeorge will be sadly missed by all of the surviving members of his family with whom his timeless wisdom, strength, and laughter are fondly remembered. May he and his wife find eternal peace.\n\nFuneral services will be held Friday, June 16, 2017 at 12:00 pm in the Chapel at the Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake, North Carolina.
